The existential dread of a 20-something in 2026

Today I watched a YouTube video on AI and how it is affecting our society. It got me inspired to fire up my brain for once and just try something new. A skill that gets taken for granted far too often. That’s what scares me about AI. It teaches people to offload critical thinking.

AI, politics, natural disasters (including the covid pandemic), and the rapid technological advancements in recent years have forced my generation, Gen Z, to reassess our core values and morality. Personally, I’ve realized that becoming well-educated, creative, and empathetic are pertinent to leading a truly fulfilling life.

Recently, I find myself infatuated with anything made by a human. Old movies, hand carvings, poetry, books, and YouTube videos. As long as I know it’s made by a human. I find human media comforting in such a sterile and robotic world.

My biggest fear is that AI will convince an entire generation that creativity isn’t necessary. That complex thinking will become obsolete. Or worst of all we will become compliant to AGI and live for instant gratification and live in some sort of dystopian Wall-E type society.

I do believe we can use AI in a pragmatic way. It’s a powerful and useful tool. But we need to be cognizant of how we are putting our minds to use. Our brains are a muscle. So lets exercise it! Remember to write something down with pen and paper, write your own damn emails and create. your. own. art.

    Great article!

The question is, what do we do about it? What can we do?

What is most ethical considering what we know?

      Too true.

And that is a reasonable compromise regarding AI.

I think saying no AI is impossible at this point, but using it for certain things is over doing it.

Thank you Christopher! I think, as fore mentioned in my article, that we use it more sparingly. Like we would with Grammarly or an automated citation generator. It’s a tool. But it’s being used as a crutch. So I would propose that we put a stop to most forms of generative AI in terms of media. Younger generations already push back against AI, and these companies are losing money on AI as it is. I think that if enough people stopped using AI or used it as a tool such as coders running their code through co-pilot to break-fix their code as opposed to regular people using it to write their emails, we could halt any further development of AI. If no one wants it, why create it?
